5 Ways to Keep Your Chanel Ballet Flats Looking New for Years

As a former celebrity stylist, Chanel ballet flats are one of the shoes I've reached for more than almost any other. They're timeless, versatile, and effortlessly elegant, but they're also surprisingly delicate.

Between buttery lambskin, quilted leather, soft grosgrain trim, and thin leather soles, Chanel flats aren't designed to withstand years of wear without a little care. The good news? Keeping them looking beautiful doesn't require an elaborate routine. Just a few simple habits can dramatically extend their life.

These are the five things I recommend to clients, and the same routine I follow with my own collection.

1. Use Shoe Trees After Every Wear

The biggest mistake people make happens the moment they take their shoes off.

Leather naturally relaxes after being worn, and without support, the toe box begins to soften and crease. Over time, those creases become permanent.

A quick wipe with a soft microfiber cloth removes dust and everyday buildup before it settles into the leather.

About once a month, give your flats a more thorough cleaning using products specifically designed for delicate leather. While you're cleaning, inspect the stitching, sole, and edges for any signs of wear that a cobbler can address before they become expensive repairs.

4. Build a Relationship with a Great Cobbler

If there's one investment that consistently pays off, it's finding an excellent cobbler.

Chanel's leather soles are elegant, but they're also thin. Waiting until they've completely worn through often means repairing damage that could have been prevented.

Depending on how often you wear your flats, have them inspected every six to twelve months. A protective sole, minor touch up, or heel replacement is far less expensive than major restoration and can significantly extend the life of your shoes.

5. Condition the Leather Twice a Year

Lambskin is beautiful because it's incredibly soft, but that softness also makes it more susceptible to drying out over time.

Conditioning the leather every six months helps maintain its suppleness, minimizes fine surface cracking, and keeps the leather looking rich and healthy.
